OH how boring our lives would be without the love of our 2 dogs, 2 cats & 4 chickens
Meet Lucky…we rescued him from the local animal shelter 3 years ago….Apparently his family could no longer afford him, they were his family since he was a puppy, I can only imagine how hard that was for them. But he has a good home here and is such a good boy! He LOVES everyone…except the cats, who LOVE him but when they want to snuggle he acts like I do if I see a big spider, snake or bat! EEKKKKK!
He spends most of his day in the house napping, loves to nap on the porch when it is nice out, his meals are prepared and served to him twice a day and when he is lucky(no pun intended), the chickens get good food scraps and he sneaks down to the coop to eat their lettuce and cucumbers!
Meet Cami – she is a 5 year old Morkie who is smarter then I am (ok not really but she is pretty smart). She has been a part of our family since she was 6 weeks old. She is full of energy and Loves to play with our cats, chase obsess over chipmunks, run in the yard with Lucky & eat the cat food.
Our “princess” Lola! She is a good kitty who loves to mother all of the other animals. She loves to go outside in the summer but waits at the door to come in to use the litter box, apparently she can not find anywhere else to go on 20 acres of land!
The newest addition to our family “Lucy”. She is the sweetest kitty ever and is always talking. She loves when we are all in the same room on the same couch snuggling and follows us around like a puppy.
These four ladies from left to right are Peepers, Nora, Charlotte & Rebel. (Peppers & Charlotte are Buff Orpingtons and Nora and Rebel are Barred Rocks) We have had them for 8 months and they have laid 6 or 7 eggs!!! That is right ONLY 6 or 7! EACH Chicken is supposed to lay 1 egg ever 23 hours…not mine tho 🙂 They are lucky they are funny or they may have been dinner already! If you are thinking about getting chickens I would say “GO FOR IT” they are so funny to watch. We let ours free range, but if you do this you must know that chickens poop a LOT. We will be putting gates to the entries of our decks this summer so that it is not a chicken poop land mine field & we will still be able to walk on the deck barefoot.
UPDATE: Egg production is in full force! All chickens are laying eggs, the trouble now is finding them, it is like an Easter egg hunt every day. (after talking with a friend who is a seasoned chicken owner, she informed me that chickens take 9 months to a year to start laying. I had previously read they will start laying eggs after 6 months….I was a bit premature in my panic of non-egg laying chickens).
UPDATE” 4/17/16 – The Chickens are no longer with us….one by one something picked them off. We plan on getting more but will need to get a fence installed so we can keep them safe when we are not home and at night.
